But it turned out that was 9 percent across the board. It turns out that there could not be a placebo effect at the level we measured it." With testosterone and DHEA levels, there should have been a significant decline. And in more typical case, testosterone can be linked to sexual dysfunction in men, and DHEA, perhaps better known as the estrogen of sex and pregnancy, can act to make women more responsive sexual stimuli. "There is no evidence that DHEA the culprit for people who get 'sexual dysfunction,'" Lepper says. But the research showed that there was a significant improvement in the total number of sexual experiences that women experienced when given the drug, and that improvements were greater than they for women who took a placebo. Other drugs have been found to improve women's sexual function. But the combination of two medications in this study produced the most dramatic results. "It is important to note that the effect we were testing was the effect of sex with a woman partner, not sexual activity without a partner. The placebo condition had no effect on sexual frequency or satisfaction with a partner," Lepper says. "We know from other research that for men, sexual frequency is much higher when they are involved in a sexual relationship with woman compared to when they are not. So it is not surprising that we saw a major improvement among women using a placebo. It is also not surprising that the drug seemed to have a positive impact on satisfaction with a partner." The researchers are now hoping to test this drug at Men's Multiple Sclerosis clinics in several clinical trials which men report feeling less depressed and anxiety than before taking the drug. Other studies will be conducted to test the medication on men with other forms of sexual dysfunction. For a long time, Lepper and others have known that certain antidepressants been linked to improved sexual functioning. The most commonly used antidepressant is Prozac. Other known drugs include Celexa (escitalopram), Lexapro and Zoloft (sertraline). These medications work by reducing levels of catecholamines (which are brain chemicals that involved in sexual arousal and pain sensitivity emotional control). The increased levels of these brain chemicals have been associated with sexual dysfunction. However, because some people can take the drugs before sexual intercourse and still experience improvement, others only temporary benefit, the question is: how much is too and what, if any, biological mechanisms might be involved? Lepper says the results of this study support the need for more studies of this medication.
